Just in: Lagos state govt to close Ikeja road for 15 months

- Lagosians who make use of some roads in Ikeja, Lagos will have to use alternative routes very soon

- The state government has announced that some streets in the area will be used as diversions while the Lagos rail line project continues

- According to the state's commissioner for transportation, Frederic Oladeinde, this will last for 15 months

In a bid to enable the construction of Ikeja Overpass for the red line project of the Lagos rail mass transit, the state has announced that it will be diverting traffic on Adegbola Street from Sunday, April 11, for one year and three months.

This proposed move was disclosed on Thursday, April 8, by the state's commissioner for transportation, Frederic Oladeinde, who explained that the diversion is intended to prevent accidents for motorists and pedestrians during the period, The Nation reports.

Oladeinde added that motorists from Computer Village and Simbiat Abiola Way heading towards Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway will be diverted to Akinremi street to connect Oshifila Street so as to go through the rail level crossing.

Even more, the commissioner announced that motorists from Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway will be diverted to the Ikeja rail level crossing to connect Balogun Street and connect Oduyemi Street to link Obafemi Awolowo way.

Oladeinde went on to state that traffic advisory boards will be placed at Ikeja under bridge area, Simbiat Abiola way Junction and Adebola/Balogun Junctions to guide motorists through the diversions.

Meanwhile, the federal government has borrowed about $2.5 billion from China Exim Bank for the construction of the Lagos to Ibadan railway project.

Rotimi Amaechi, the minister of transportation, made the disclosure during an exclusive interview on Monday, March 29.

He explained that it was the government's decision to extend the rail line to the seaport in Apapa which was not in the original design. Amaechi added that the railway extension was for economic benefit.

The minister went on to note that the two basic loan facilities presented by the Ministry of Transportation have been approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
