Insecurity: Former Head of State Raises Alarm over Killing of About 80,000 Nigerians

- A former Nigerian leader, Abdusalami Abubakar, has raised concerns over insecurity in the country

- Abubakar said there is a link between the proliferation of weapons and insecurity

- The elder statesmen made recommendations for solving Nigeria's challenges

A former Head of State, Abdusalami Abubakar, said the proliferation of weapons in the country has led to over 80,000 deaths and close to 3million Internal Displaced Persons (IDP).

Premium Times reported that Abubakar made the statement on Wednesday, April 7, during a meeting of the National Peace Committee (NPC) in Abuja.

He said there are over six million weapons in Nigeria.

The former Nigerian leader said:

“The proliferation of all calibre of weapons not only in our sub-region in general and in Nigeria in particular is worrying. It is estimated that there are over six million of such weapons in circulation in the country.

"This certainly exacerbated the insecurity that led to over 80,000 deaths and close to 3 million IDPs.’’

TheCable reported that Abubakar stated that the Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, rising poverty among others, were challenges that the country must find a way to resolve.

He advocated for concrete suggestions that can inspire more confidence among citizens to ensure Nigeria remains one.

Meanwhile, the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari over the insecurity in the country.

Samson Ayokunle during the Holy Convocation organised by the Victory Life Bible Church argued that the insecurity afflicting the country was caused by Buhari's negligence, Punch reported

He said criminals in the country are being more professional than various security outfits in Nigeria.

In another report, a combined military operation has commenced to flush out criminal elements in Essien Udim local government area of Akwa Ibom state.

Nigeria's minister of Niger Delta affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio is from the local government area which has witnessed series of attacks on security operatives in recent times.

The area has been under siege by unknown criminal elements who have in the past few weeks, carried out coordinated attacks on southeast and south-south states.
