Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has provided an update on the future of team captain Lionel Messi who is being heavily linked away from the Spanish club at the end of the season.

The Argentine’s contract lapses during the summer which means he will be a free agent, amid links to Premier League club Manchester City and Ligue 1 outfit PSG.

At the moment it remains unclear where Messi will be playing next season, but Barcelona are doing everything to ensure the six-time Ballon d’Or winner signs a new contract at the club.

Messi has been linked with the likes of City and PSG, but Koeman insists Barca are trying everything to keep their talisman next season. He said, as per Diario Sport via Soccer Laduma:

“Of course it’s a very important matter.
“We’re trying to do our best so that Leo stays. But that moment [of his announcement] isn’t going to be next year. Now we have to focus on is playing a game tomorrow.”

Lionel Messi's future at Barcelona remains one of the puzzles the board of Joan Laporta must solve before the end of the season.

Messi has continued to give the Catalan club sleepless nights following his refusal to pen an extension with less than three months left on his current deal.

Although the new president is confident he can get the 33-year-old to extend his reign at Camp Nou, the decision solely lies with the player.

Meanwhile, president of La Liga Javier Tebas has urged embattled Barcelona captain Lionel Messi to remain at the Catalan club beyond this season.

Tebas was among those that prevented the Argentine from leaving Spain last season after the superstar threatened he wanted to move.

Messi was forced to rescind his decision after La Liga and Barcelona chiefs cited a clause in his contract - and with the player’s contract coming to an end, Tebas advised him to remain.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Spanish outfit Barcelona have been recognized as the best football club of the 21st century according to the International Federation of Football, History and Statistics (IFFHS).

The Catalan club has been named as the most outstanding club of the decade (2011-2020) as a result of their scintillating performance in the number of years.

Barcelona won several titles in the last ten years including six La Liga Santander titles, two UEFA Champions League titles as well as two Club World Cups.
