The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) came under criticism after it shared a post advising Nigerians to "think deeply" before accepting offers to relocate abroad for a better life.

The short message which was shared on the agency's Twitter handle on Saturday, April 3, read:

“Hey Guys, you may need to think deeply over that bogus offer of a better life abroad. You may end up in modern day slavery. Not all that glitters is gold."

It appears the NIS was trying to caution Nigerians on some of the dangers associated with accepting bogus offers of a better life abroad, such as human trafficking.

Nigerians react

Well, Nigerians were not having it and lashed out at the agency. While some complained about how the process of getting their passports has been a nightmare, others were more concerned about the quality of the flyer and criticised the agency.

Legit.ng gathered some of the reactions below:

Adadioramma with the Twitter handle @Madonna_ChyNwa said:

"There's nothing more slavery, than the way you guys treat Nigerians before you issue them their passport. You should pay more attention to that, before tweeting this."

@Alexcious7 said the modern-day slavery in Nigeria is worse.

@ghostperson01 was also of the opinion that Nigerians are slaves in their own country.

@simmony10 who paid and has been captured since January wondered how long it would take for the agency to process a passport.

@thadefund asked the service to explain why there is no paper to produce passports.

"Can you explain to Nigerians why there is no paper to produce passport and when government can make papers available to Akure, NIS. My money is hanging in one company now because my passport is expired and can't have access till I bring a valid passport. Thank you."
