Why I Won’t Travel Abroad for Medical Check-Up, Nigerian Governor Reveals Day after Buhari's UK Trip

Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers state, has said he won’t travel abroad for medical check-up, boasting that everything he needs for medical examination is in the Government House Clinic built by his administration.

The Punch reported that the governor stated this on Wednesday, March 31, when a delegation of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

Legit.ng gathers that Governor Wike in a statement signed by his media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, noted that Nigeria's healthcare system needs very serious attention.

He said Nigeria has the resources to make quality healthcare available to the citizens, The Nation also reported.

His words:

“The health care system in Nigeria requires very serious attention. It is unfortunate where we are. I don’t want to comment on people who are traveling for medical check. I have not travelled for the past two years.
“If we have all these things here why do we have to travel. We have all it takes to provide it. Why will I go out to do my check (overseas) when I have all the facilities in Government House?
“I don’t need it. Everything that is required for me to undergo any test is here. The resources we have it. Why can’t we provide it for our people?”

Legit.ng notes that Governor Wike’s comment comes a day after President Muhammadu Buhari travelled to London for a routine medical check-up.

The Nigerian leader took-off in one of the jets in the presidential fleet from the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.

His spokesman, Femi Adesina, noted via a short statement posted on his Facebook page on Monday, March 29, that Buhari is due back in the country during the second week of April 2021.
