Fish out Perpetrators of Ebonyi Massacre, Southeast Senators Tell IGP

A caucus of southeast lawmakers in the Senate has condemned the mindless killings carried out by some gunmen suspected to be killer herdsmen in Ebonyi on Tuesday, March 30.

The senators, chaired by Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy president of the red chamber, in a statement on Wednesday, March 31, called on Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu to do everything possible in tracking and arresting perpetrators of the crimes, Punch reports.

According to Vanguard, the caucus kicked against what it referred to as massacre in its entirety, insisting that these criminals must never go unpunished like others in the past.

Part of the statement read:

“This act is most unfeeling and gruesome, and we condemn it in totality. But more importantly, this must not go unpunished like others before it.
“It is imperative to warn that the Nigerian state is fast delegitimising itself by its failure to discharge the primary purpose of government, which is security and welfare of the people, as clearly prescribed in Section 14 of the 1999 constitution."

Earlier, some suspected herdsmen invaded Obeagu community in the Ishielu local government area of Ebonyi state and killed 16 persons who were between the ages of 18 and 56.

Legit.ng gathered that about 10 motorcycles and a vehicle, whose owners were killed in the community, were set ablaze.

The report stated that one of the residents who escaped the onslaught, Ngozi Odoabuchi, described the incident as horrible.

She noted:

“I went to Ishielu local government headquarters where I am working and after the close of work, I took a motorcycle popularly known as okada from Nkalagu to my community, Obeagu.
"It was around 4.30 pm. The okada man is from my community; so, he took me and one other person, a lady."
