Manchester City have reportedly made a U-turn on their chase for out-of-contract Barcelona captain Lionel Messi this summer.

The Argentine's current deal with the Catalans expires at the end of this season - leaving his future at the club highly uncertain.

City are one of the strong contenders to land the 33-year-old once his deal with Barca lapses but they seem to have shifted their focus on other priorities.

This has now boosted Paris Saint Germain's chances of securing the services of the six-time Ballon d'Or winner ahead of the coming season.

Although the Blaugrana new president Joan Laporta is confident he can convince Messi to extend his reign at the Nou Camp beyond this term, adding that his relationship with the player will go a long way in achieving the feat.

The Premier League table-toppers believe the 33-year-old is edging closer to a new bumper deal with his current club according to Soccer Laduma quoting Sport.

Messi has been heavily linked with an exit from the Blaugrana ever since he attempted to leave the club last August - with City and PSG understood to be interested in securing his signature.

He had series of altercations with the former board head by Josep Bartomeu most especially after Bayern Munich's 8-2 humiliation in their Champions League quarterfinal meetings last season.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Brazil legend Rivaldo believes Lionel Messi will not leave Barcelona when his contract expires this summer.

The 48-year-old former midfielder says the Argentine has been full of life since Joan Laporta returned as the president this month.

And this is an indication that the six-time Ballon d'Or winner will extend his stay with the Catalans beyond this campaign.
