A throw-back photo has continued to make the rounds on social media showing new Super Eagles invitee Anayo Iwuala struggling to take a picture with Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Enyimba of Aba striker was called into the national team by coach Gernot Rohr, as a replacement for Almeria forward Sadiq Umar who could not make trip back home.

Umar who has been impressive for the Spanish side was not released by his club due to Covid-19 protocols.

His scintillating form earned him his first call-up to the senior national team, having previously starred for the West African’s U23 side.

Recall that the Super Eagles had played their previous AFCON qualifying matches in Asaba, the Delta State capital, a picture shows Anayo Iwuala struggling to take a picture with Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho.

It was gathered that the photo was taken in 2019, and now Anayo is now Iheanacho’s team-mate ahead of the AFCON 2021 qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has explained that his team had to rely on ‘full moon’ during their training session upon arrival at Porto-Novo on Friday evening, March 26.

Nigeria arrived Benin Republic via the waterways, a day before they face the Squirrels at the Stade Charles de Gaulle.

Both teams will go head-to-head in an AFCON 2021 qualifier in their bid to reach the tournament proper which has been postponed till January next year.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the much-anticipated AFCON 2022 qualifiers may have suffered a huge setback as reports claim that two Benin players have tested positive for coronavirus.

Renowned sports journalist Charles Anazodo made the revelation on his official Twitter handle.

An official statement is yet to be made by the Benin Football Federation regarding the latest development as the match is just a few hours away from kick-off.
