Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru has been advised to withdraw Nigerian soldiers from governors and politicians.

This suggestion was given by Governor Nyesom Wike on Tuesday, March 23, when Attahiru and a delegation of top military officers paid him a visit at Government House Port Harcourt, Channels TV reports.

According to Wike, most soldiers are not interested in their jobs because they have been exposed to politics contrary to what was obtainable in the past.

As a way forward, the Rivers governor urged the Nigerian Army boss to withdraw soldiers attached to influential persons like politicians so that they can concentrate on the anti-terrorism war.

Wike said:

“The country is facing a lot of insecurity now. So withdraw these soldiers from politicians so that the soldiers can go and do their work.
“In those days when you see a soldier, you run. These days, it is difficult because soldiers have been exposed to politics.
“I want you to make a difference to say that what your interest is to protect Nigerians, fight bandits, insurgency and not to carry ballot boxes.”

The Independent reports that the governor said he did not have confidence in the leadership of the former service chiefs led by General Gabriel Olonisakin. This influenced his decision to oppose the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF)'s approval for the fresh withdrawal of funds by the federal government to fight insecurity.
