Just In: Fire Razes Katsina Central Market, Goods Worth Millions of naira Destroyed

- A section of the Katsina central market was on fire on Monday, March 22

- The flames destroyed a lot of shops housing properties and goods of traders

- However, the police command in the state has not given any statement on the cause of the inferno

Many goods worth millions of naira were destroyed as an inferno which spread to shops in a central market in Katsina state on Monday, March 22.

This Day reports that the flames have already caused serious damage as early as 8am when traders hurriedly evacuated the properties from shops.

Also, TVC News reports that youths were seen helping to rescue a lot of goods from being damaged by the fire.

Although the cause of the fire is still unknown, operatives of the Katsina State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) were seen at the scene battling to quench the flames.

Also, officials of the Nigerian Police (NPF), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) came around to contain the situation.

Meanwhile, the presidency had reacted to the viral reports on social media that occupants of the Aso Rock Villa witnessed a fire outbreak in the premises on Saturday, March 6.

In a tweet on Sunday, March 7, a presidential media aide, Garba Shehu, denied the claim and stated clearly that there was no such incident at the villa. Shehu said the false report has spread to as far as outside the shore of Nigeria.

He tweeted:

"People in the country and even abroad have been expressing concerns over reports of a fire incident in Aso Rock Villa, the seat of the Nigerian government.

"I would like to clarify that there was no fire inside the Presidential Villa."

However, Shehu admitted that there was an inferno in a bush behind the fence of the villa on the night of Saturday, but that through the intervention of firefighters, the flames were not allowed to make their way into the complex.
