2023: Gowon Intervenes, Reveals how Candidates for Presidential, Governorship Elections Should Be Selected

- Ahead of the 2023 elections, former head of state Gowon has made new recommendations on how candidates for elective positions should be selected

- Gowon advised that the presidency should be rotated among the country's six major political regions

- The former leader also advised the rotation of the governorship seats among the three senatorial seats in each state

Nigeria's former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has canvassed for the zoning and rotation of the presidency among the six geopolitical zones of the country.

Nigerian Tribune reported that Gowon said this will give rooms for Nigeria to experience peace and development.

Legit.ng gathers that the elder statesman made this known at the weekend during the celebration of the 100 years anniversary of the Barewa Old Boys Association (BOBA) in Zaria, Kaduna state.

The former leader also recommended that there should be two vice presidents, one from the zone where the president comes from and the other should be elected during the presidential election.

At the subnational level, Gowon also advised that governorship seats should be rotated among the three senatorial districts in each state, The Nation also reported.

According to him, this would help lessen the burden and cry for marginalisation.

He noted that no ethnic group is better outside the nation than inside as one united Nigeria just as he said insecurity is giving the northern region a bad name and image.

Gowon stressed the need for the nation to be united, adding that any attempt to scrap the powers of local governments should be rejected.

Meanwhile, a panel of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said merit, not zoning, should determine the party’s presidential candidate in the general elections in 2023.

Submitting the report of his committee to the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) on Wednesday, March 17, Governor Mohammed said every part of the country should be given the opportunity to choose the best candidate.
