Sunday Oliseh Says Only Players Playing Top Leagues Should Play For Super Eagles

- Sunday Oliseh believes unlike his playing days, the present Super Eagles side can only boast of a few players featuring for top-flight European clubs

Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Olisheh has urged Gernot Rohr to invite only the best players plying their trade in football's top leagues across the world the opportunity to play for Nigeria.

Oliseh made this known during an interview with Channels TV and as seen on Leadership.

According to Oliseh, the criteria for invitation to play for Super Eagles is nothing to write home about at the moment, as he added that a lot has change since his departure.

Oliseh said: “The demands that we have; the qualification that you have before you can play for the Super Eagles; the bar has been reduced.

“We as a nation are now happy with mediocrity. We celebrate even third place in Africa. When you are Nigerian, you are the best. You don’t celebrate even a second.”

“That is why when I coached Super Eagles, the first thing I told them was ‘If you are not playing in the first division anywhere in the world, forget Super Eagles’ because the best has to play here."

“We don’t have a lot of top players playing at the top level at the moment. In fact, the most solid player we have now is Wilfred Ndidi because he has got a lot as a player."

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that former Nigerian international Daniel Amokachi has disclosed that one of his former team-mates that he respects so much is ex-captain Sunday Oliseh.

According to Daniel ‘The Bull’, Oliseh is filled with so much knowledge abouth the game of football, adding that he the former national team coach still has a lot to offer.

He said this on a Brila FM programme monitored by Sporting Life that if Oliseh is allowed another chance, he would do a lot to benefit Nigeria.

According to Amokachi, he is still ‘very much in touch with his former teammates, especially the Super Eagles set of 1994 FIFA World Cup to the United States.

Amokachi said: “I respect Oliseh, the guy knows a lot about football. He is a bundle of talent but he was not given enough time when he was with the national team. His stay was very short and there’s nothing he could do with that and he left the stage."
