Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo joins a growing list of players who will play no part in Nigeria's important AFCON qualifying games against Benin Republic and Lesotho.

This follows report that his Spanish club Leganes have stopped him from attending Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying games.

The 27-year-old defender told Complete Sports: “My club refused to let me go. I won’t be coming to the game because of Covid."

Omeruo will now miss out in the games just like the trio of Samuel Kalu, Moses Simon and Sadiq Umar who were also stopped by their respective clubs from honouring invitations for the qualifiers.

The reason given by their clubs is due to a travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

There are growing fears that more players will also be forced out of the qualifiers due to the travel restrictions.

However, Gernot Rohr has replaced Omeruo with Abia Warriors defender Adeleke Adekunle as he hopes all invited players will make it early enough to camp as Super Eagles eye a place in AFCON 2022.

The Super Eagles will confront Benin Republic on March 27 at the Stade Charles de Gaulle, Porto-Novo, before hosting Lesotho three days later at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that following COVID-19 restrictions which puts the availability of some players as uncertain, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has finally invited Paul Onuachu for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.

Nigeria is billed to face off with Lesotho and Benin later this month and Onuachu who has so far scored 26 goals for Genk this season was initially on Rohr’s stand-by list.

Despite scoring 26 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions for his Belgian side, the German-born handler decided to overlook the lanky striker in his initial 24-man squad.

Onuachu has played nine matches for the three-time African champions scoring one in the process but he has not been enjoying quality playing time under the national team boss.
