President Buhari reacts to death of Tanzanian president

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a condolence message to the people of Tanzania over the death of President John Pombe Magufuli.

Buhari said Magufuli’s legacy of patriotism and dedication to the African course will continue to resonate across the continent, according to a statement issued by a presidential aide, Garba Shehu on Thursday, March 18.

He recalled how the late Tanzanian president inspired various reforms with clear priorities on education and health and consistently fighting profligacy and frivolities in public expenditures.

The Nigerian leader said:

''President Buhari affirms that the former Tanzanian leader spent most of his life serving the country and humanity, with a rich pedigree of working as a school teacher, and rising steadily in public service as Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister of Works, Minister of Works, Minister of Lands and Human Settlement and Minister of Livestock and Fisheries.''

Buhari said Magufuli was a visionary leader who was patriotic and dedicated in his duties.

Meanwhile, a group under the aegis of South-South Emerging Leaders Forum (SELF) has expressed happiness over the approval of $1.5 billion (about N600 billion) by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery.

The forum described the news as exciting even as it commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the minister of state for petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva.

In a statement sent to Legit.ng on Thursday, March 18, and signed by its national coordinator Barrister Benjamin Kolowei, the forum said fixing the refinery will positively impact the economic activities in the south-south region.

In another news, President Muhammadu Buhari has said his administration has discovered that criminals have infiltrated the mining industry in the country.

The Punch reported that Buhari made this known on Tuesday, March 16, while declaring open the 56th annual international conference and exhibition of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

Legit.ng gathered that the theme of the conference was: ‘Responsible exploration and exploitation of mineral resources in a secured environment.
