The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has reacted to the Kwara state government's position on the issue of hijab-wearing.

CAN called on the federal government and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to wade into the issue, stating that it might spark violence if not handled promptly, Daily Trust reports.

In fact, the association's general secretary, Joseph Bade Daramola, disclosed that by reopening schools without first resolving the pending issues on ground, the state has opened a loophole for hoodlums who are now vandalising mission schools.

Moreover, Nigerian Tribune, in its report quotes CAN as alleging that some Christians are now being attacked in the state by some miscreants.

Expressing disappointment over the government's way of handling a matter as sensitive as religion, Daramola stated that Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq should be held responsible if any church in the state is attacked.

CAN's secretary stated:

“The governor of Kwara state, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, should be held responsible if the matter degenerates because it was his pronouncement on the issue of hijab-wearing in violation of the court directive on the matter to maintain status quo until the matter is finally resolved by the court that led to this trouble."

Earlier, the state government gave its final say on the issue of hijab-wearing among Muslim students in public schools.

According to a statement by the secretary to the state government, Mamman Saba Jibril, shared on the Twitter page of the Kwara government, the schools became the state's properties since 1974.
