WTO DG Okonjo-Iweala visits Nigeria to meet President Buhari

- Weeks after starting her new job as WTO DG, ex-finance minister Okonjo-Iweala is back in Nigeria

- Dr Okonjo-Iweala touched down in Abuja, the federal capital, where she was received by trade ministry officials

- The global economy expert is expected to be in Nigeria for a week

Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and former coordinating minister of the Nigerian economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has arrived in the country, The Cable reports.

Okonjo-Iweala, who is on a one-week visit to Nigeria, was received by Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the permanent secretary of the ministry of industry, trade, and investment.

Channels TV reports that Okonjo-Iweala said her visit, the first since emerging WTO DG, was to show appreciation to Nigeria's leader President Muhammadu Buhari for his support during the race to the top job.

The former minister under the Goodluck Jonathan administration is expected to meet with President Buhari on Monday, March 15, reports TVC.

Okonjo-Iweala told pressmen that she will discuss with President Buhari and other relevant stakeholders what her leadership of the WTO holds for Nigeria's economy.

She said:

“The whole objective is to see how the WTO can better assist Nigeria and Nigerian entrepreneurs with respect to improving the economy."
“We hope to be able to use the African Continental Free Trade agreement to improve our trade and to do that we have to improve investments, we have to add value to some of our products."
“This continental free trade agreement is a unique opportunity for us to be able to engage commercially with other African countries and boost our exports.”

Legit.ng notes that weeks ago, after much delay, Okonjo-Iweala was finally appointed as the new DG of the WTO on Monday, February 15.
