The Germany Football Association made the announcement on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.

Low, who guided Germany to the Wold Cup in 2014, will leave his post one year before the end of his contract.

Since World Cup glory, Germany has been in a slow steady decline, with pressure mounting on the 61-year old.

Germany reached the semi-finals of the Euro 2016 but fell short of any success in the next World Cup where they were famously eliminated in the group stages.

They also failed to impress in the inaugural UEFA Nations League campaign.

According to Sky Sports, Lowe, whose contract ran until 2022, approached the German Football Association (DFB) to request an early departure.

"I take this step very consciously, full of pride and enormous gratitude, but at the same time continue to be very motivated when it comes to the upcoming European Championship tournament," he said.

He initially took the Germany top job in August 2006 from the country’s legendary striker Jurgen Klinsmann.

Stefan Kuntz, who is Germany’s current under 21 coach, has been tipped as the most likely successor of Low.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who has won the Bundesliga, Champions League and Premier League, has also been thrown in the mix of possible replacements.

In total, Lowe managed 189 games as Germany’s head coach, winning 120 of those games and drawing 38 and experiencing 31 losses. His win percentage currently stands at 61%.

The most memorable victory as Germany coach for Low will probably be the infamous 7-1 victory over Brazil in the 2014 World Cup semi final.
