Breaking: One dead, several injured as NURTW factions clash

- This was caused by a clash between two rival NURTW factions in the southwest state

- One person has been reported dead in the incident that threw the entire area into total confusion

A report by The Punch indicates that business activities were on Tuesday, March 9, paralysed at the busy Oba Adesida road of Akure, Ondo state following a violent clash between two factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

While the armed union members attacked each other, residents and traders in the popular area ran for their lives leaving business activities paralysed. Vehicles were also vandalised by the fighters during the clash.

In another report by The Cable, an unidentified man was reportedly killed during the clash that occurred around Benin/Ado garage along Ilesha/Owo expressway.

The clash left several persons injured and vehicles damaged as NURTW members went on a gunshot rampage in Akure.

A witness speaking to the news publication stated that social and economic activities in the area have been paralysed.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that days after he was sworn-in for the second term as the governor of Ondo state, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, banned activities of the NURTW and the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) from all motor parks in the state.

Both unions were warned to stop collecting dues and levies from commercial drivers in the state.

Akeredolu, who spoke through his senior special assistant on special duties and strategy, Doyin Odebowale, said the ban of the driver unions’ activities was due to leadership tussles in Ondo state.
