President Buhari says Nigeria is worried about Niger Republic's stability

- President Muhammadu Buhari says he is keen on Niger Republic enjoying political stability as Nigeria's neighbour

- The president made the statement while receiving a report on the just concluded election in the neighbouring country

- The election was monitored on behalf of West African nations by a team led by Nigeria's former vice president, Alhaji Namadi Sambo

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, March 8 said that Nigeria is concerned about the stability of its northern neighbour, Niger Republic.

The president made the comment while receiving a report on the elections in the country from former Nigerian vice president, Namadi Sambo.

Sambo is the head of mission of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, on the election.

A statement issued by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina and seen by Legit.ng, quoted the president as saying:

“We are concerned about their stability, and I am glad the elections went well. I am happy it was transparent, as attested to by most of the observers. I am glad you came back with good news.”

The ECOWAS Head of Mission on the election said he met with all the stakeholders before the polls, which went into a run-off after the initial exercise in December last year was inconclusive.

Sambo also described the election as a great improvement on that of December last year and thanked President Buhari for facilitating the transportation needs of his team.

Recall that the Nigerian government recently signed $1.959billion contracts for a rail line from Kano to the Niger Republic.

During the contract signing ceremony, Nigeria's transport minister Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi expressed optimism that the project will be completed in the next 36 months.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, March 4 directed the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, to improve surveillance and control around Nigerian borders, adding that criminals should be prevented from finding Nigeria as a safe haven to hide and perpetuate their criminality.

President Buhari issued the directive in his speech at the virtual inauguration of NIS Technology Building in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

The president further instructed all security agencies to raise their performance in protecting lives and property, with a mandate that the country’s Global Security Index must be improved.

In a related development, the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA) has built a new primary health care centre with a 30-bed capacity and a motorized borehole with an overhead tank for a border community in Gurin local government area of Adamawa state.

This was revealed in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Wednesday, March 3 by Mr. Sadiq Abdullahi Isa, the deputy director of the public affairs and protocol unit of the BCDA.
