Tottenham Hotspur have taken a step ahead in their hopes of securing Champions League football after securing a 4-1 comfortable win over London rivals, Crystal Palace, on Sunday night, March 7.

Spurs were out in search of a third successive league win having won two of their previous fixtures including their 1-0 win over Fulham in midweek.

The Jose Mourinho-tutored side wasted no time to show intent to put the game to bed as they were dominant from the blow of the whistle.

Their first chance to break the deadlock came in the sixth minute through Heung-Min Son who was brilliantly set up by Gareth Bale only for the Korean to head straight at Vicente Guaita from eight yards.

Despite defending immaculately, Palace eventually conceded in the 25th minute, with Bale breaking the deadlock with a simple tap-in from Harry Kane's low cross.

However, Spurs were unable to defend the lead in the final minutes of the first half, allowing Christian Benteke to plant home an equaliser from Luka Milivojevic's curled cross.

Bale went on to restore the home side's lead moments after the break, slamming a header into the net to complete his brace of the evening.

Kane put the game beyond Palace in the 52nd minute, with the Englishman whipping a glorious finish into the top corner to bag his 15th goal of the season.

Wilfried Zaha had a chance to restore the visitors' hopes of staging a comeback in the 69th-minute but saw his precise low shot hit the inside of the at post.

Kane put the game to bed eight minutes later, heading into an empty net after Son opted to volley the ball across the six-yard line rather than shoot.

The match eventually finished 4-1 in favour of Spurs, with the huge victory helping them leapfrog Liverpool and West Ham United to sixth on the standings.

There are now only two points separating the north Londoners in sixth and Chelsea who sit fourth. Their next league assignment will be against rivals Arsenal on Sunday, March 14.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Mario Lemina's superb strike moments before the break was all relegation-threatened Fulham needed to outshine Liverpool at Anfield.

The 27-year-old dispossessed Mohamed Salah of the ball at the edge of the 18-yard box before unleashing the thunder that went past Alisson Becker straight into the left-bottom corner of the post.

And the hosts could not respond to the goal for the remainder of the game as the Cottagers ran off with maximum points at a place where Liverpool used to call a fortress.
