Tianjin Binhai: Photos and video show Chinese big library with 1.2 million books and tall shelves

Libraries are not just places of study, they could also be abodes of peace and quiet. A photo of Tianjin Binhai Library which was established in 2017 again gained massive attention as it resurfaced on social media.

Sharing the photo on LinkedIn, a man, Talal Al Murad, said working a night shift amidst the millions of wonderful books in the library will be such a wonderful experience.

According to Wikipedia, the library is 33,700 square metres of space and its floor-to-roof bookshelf has 1.2 million books.

During its first opening, about 10,000 people came to see the beautiful architectural design. It is not all books in it as there are reading rooms and lounge areas for callers.

The place also has patios for relaxing. Other rooms are dedicated to computers, offices, storage.

It should be noted that the library was designed by a firm called MVRDV. Design Asia, a YouTube channel said that the library is nicknamed “the eye” because of its design.

An official of the library who was not named said:

“We designed the interior like mountains of books inside a cave or like terraced-farmland surround the eye. Chinese people have a special feeling towards a ‘mountain of books’."

Another thing worthy of note is that the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf does not contain any real books but images of book covers. The books are stored in another part of the library.

Design Asia also said that while the shelves could contain books, the tight deadline that was given to open the library changed that decision.

The safety of visitors climbing the stairs among the shelf was put into consideration to avoid any accident.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that emerging facts by The African History showed the Benin Kingdom, one of the oldest cities in Africa, as one of the wonders of the world before the modern age.

The same media said that the wall of the kingdom was razed during the 1897 expedition, adding that the act really affected the history of Benin and the proof that there were African civilisations before modernism.
