The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the federal government's declaration of Zamfara state as a no-fly zone.

The Nigerian government had taken the action as part of its efforts to tackle the security challenges in the state.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno disclosed on Tuesday, March 2, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari had also banned mining activities in Zamfara to stop the rising insecurity.

However, the opposition party in a statement on Wednesday, March 3, claimed that the no-fly zone policy is a plot by the APC-led federal government to take over Zamfara state which is under the control of the PDP.

The PDP further alleged that the plot involves the “imposition of an orchestrated state of emergency in the state.”

The party said the plot heightened when the governor of Zamfara, Bello Matawalle refused an alleged pressure to decamp to the APC.

The PDP said it rejects the attempt to blame Governor Matawalle for the insecurity in the state, adding that the security challenges are sprouting up due to the failures of the APC-led federal government.

The party added that there is escalated banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other forms of violent acts in APC-controlled states such as Kaduna and Katsina, yet no attempt has been made by the federal government to declare such states as “no-fly zone”.

It, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to abandon what it called a selective approach and go back to the drawing board and adopt a holistic approach to quell the prevailing insecurity.

In a related development, Governor Matawalle has rejected the federal government's decision to declare Zamfara state as a no-fly zone.

The Zamfara state governor was quoted as saying:

“It seems the security council doesn’t understand where the nature of the security problems in Zamfara state but if they decided to take such action let them go ahead. I’m not afraid of anybody and the problem of insecurity in the state predated my administration."
