Senate finally confirms new service chiefs’ appointment

- Maj. General Ibrahim Attahiru has been confirmed as the new Chief of Army Staff (CoAS)

- Attahiru was confirmed alongside other service chiefs by the Senate on Tuesday, March 2

- Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, made this known during a plenary session

The appointment of the new service chiefs has been confirmed by the Senate, following the consideration of the report of its committee on defence.

The Nation reports that the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, had on Wednesday, February 24, referred the request of President Muhammadu Buhari for confirmation of the new service chiefs to the committee.

Legit.ng gathered that Lawan gave the committee, led by Senator Aliyu Wamakko, two weeks to carry out their assignments and report to the Senate in plenary.

The Senate confirmed their appointments at the committee of the whole and at plenary on Tuesday, March 2, following the Wamakko report’s consideration.

The new service chiefs include; Maj. Gen. Lucky Eluonye Onyenuchea lrabor as Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru (Chief of Army Staff), Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Chief of Naval Staff), and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka O. Amao as Chief of Air staff.

Lawan asked the new service chiefs to take the war to the bandits and insurgents and dislodge them in their strongholds.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that President Buhari presided over the National Security Council (NSC) meeting at the State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja over insecurity in the country.

It was reported that it is the first NSC meeting the president would be holding with the new service chiefs after their appointment in January and screening/confirmation by the National Assembly in February.

Those who attended the meeting are the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo; the secretary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha; the chief of staff to the president, Professor Ibrahim Gambari; and the National Security Adviser (NSA) Major General Babagana Monguno (Rtd).

In a related report, Nigerian troops successfully recovered Marte town from the Boko Haram terrorists.

A military officer quoted in the report stated that the troops successfully and safely detonated series of IEDs laced along the routes and finally dominated the general area.

The terrorists recently hoisted their flags in military outposts in New Marte and Kirenowa, the biggest towns in the Marte local government area of Borno state.

Residents of the area were trapped in towns and villages in the local government as the insurgents moved to consolidate their hold on Marte.
