Nigerian Senate confirms Abdulrasheed Bawa as EFCC chairman

- The Senate screened Abdulrasheed Bawa for the position of EFCC boss

- After asking him questions for over an hour, Nigerian lawmakers confirmed his appointment

- This comes a week after President Muhammadu Buhari conveyed a letter to the Senate on the matter

Abdulrasheed Bawa has been confirmed as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Senate confirmed him after a screening which lasted for over two hours.

This was disclosed by a presidential aide, Bashir Ahmed.

Bawa is reported to be a trained EFCC investigator with vast experience in the investigation and prosecution of advance fee fraud cases, official corruption, bank fraud, money laundering, and other economic crimes.

Bawa who was grilled by senators with about 15 lawmakers asking him various questions denied the allegation against him that he sold recovered properties while heading the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office.

He also said that he has a good relationship with his predecessors.

Legit.ng had reported that the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) described the nomination of Bawa as chairman of the EFCC as another win for Nigerian youths.

The NYCN made the declaration in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Wednesday, February 17, and signed by its president, Comrade Solomon Adodo.

The council said it received with great delight the news of the nomination of the 40-year-old EFCC career staff subject to the confirmation of the Nigerian Senate.

Part of the statement read:

“Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa's nomination is another great win for the Nigerian youth and has gone a great deal in unifying the youth irrespective of religious or regional inclinations."
