Germany and Bayern Munich legend climbs into 3rd among Champions League all-time scorers

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is now third in the Champions League all-time scorers' chart following his goal against Lazio on Tuesday night, February 23.

The 32-year-old inspired the Bundesliga giants to put one foot in the quarter-finals of the competition following a 4-1 thrashing of the Serie A side Lazio.

Last season's top-scorer Lewandowski scored the first goal of the game in the ninth minute after pouncing on a defensive error before rounding Pepe Reina as he put the ball into the back of the net.

And then 17-year-old Jamal Musiala made it 2-0 in the 24th minute with a well-taken shot from outside of the 18-yard box as Bavarians were cruising ahead of the Italian side.

It was 3-0 three minutes before the break as Leroy Sane finished off a Kinglsey Coman rebounded shot which fell kindly into the path of the German midfielder.

Bayern were not done yet as Sane was involved in the fourth with a brilliant piece of skill as Lazio defender Francesco Acerbi scored into his own net which counted as an own goal. 4-0 it was.

Joaquin Correa grabbed a consolation to make it 4-1 but Simeone Inzaghi's team will have a mountain to climb in the second leg at the Allianz Arena.

Lewandowski’s goal in the encounter means he has now scored 72 goals in the prestigious competition overtaking Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez in the all-time scoring chart, with only Lionel Messi and Ronaldo ahead of him.

Messi has found the back of the net on 119 occasions in Europe’s elite club competition, while Ronaldo reigns surpreme with 134 goals.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez replicated his old tricks during their 1-0 loss to Premier League club Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday night, February 23.

Olivier Giroud's lone goal proved vital on as a clinical Chelsea side edged Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their last 16 tie played at National Arena in Bucharest, Romania.

The match was Thomas Tuchel's biggest European test since his arrival as Blues boss back in January when he replaced Frank Lampard who was recently sacked.
