Tension, anxiety as Lagos #ENDSARS panel summons IGP Adamu

- The Lagos #ENDSARS panel has taken a decision to speak on behalf of a victim of police brutality, Adewale Adewuyi

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Adamu has been summoned to appear before the Lagos state judicial panel of restitution and Inquiry.

The call for IGP Adamu's presence after a hearing in which a petitioner, Adewale Adewuyi, claimed that his 26 acres of farmland were allegedly impounded by police since 2013.

According to Debo Adeleke, Adewuyi's lawyer, some policemen invaded and destroyed his client's farmland, The Nation reports.

Adeleke said that as a consequence of this, Adewuyi became unable to cater to himself and as such, suffered deteriorating health.

The lawyer recalled that the force in 2017 was asked by court order to release the farmland and pay damages to the petitioner to no avail.

His words:

“That order is needed, although I’m not supposed to say this is a fact-finding panel, we need to summon the IGP, so that he can tell the commissioner of police to release this land to us. They are not using the law, it is just there.
“Everybody fears the Lagos state judicial panel on restitution. We will be grateful if my lord will issue the order.”

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari had extended the tenure of Adamu.

IGP Adamu was due for retirement on Monday, February 1, 2021. Legit.ng gathered that the news was broken on Thursday, February 4, by the minister of police affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, while briefing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The minister said the extension was for three months. Dingyadi added that the decision of the president to extend the IGP’s tenure was to give time for the proper selection of the new IGP.
