EFCC: APC chieftain accuses former governors, ministers of working against Bawa’s appointment

Former governors and ministers have been accused of working against the appointment of Abdulrasheed Bawa as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Sir Lucky Worluh, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the allegation while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Leadership reports.
Bawa, a 40-year-old trained EFCC prosecutor, was on Tuesday, February 16, appointed the substantive chairman of the anti-corruption agency in a letter addressed to the Nigerian Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Worluh went on to note that Bawa as a detective with the EFCC had investigated high-profile corruption cases involving several ex-governors and ministers as well as recovering funds from several foreign countries.
The APC chieftain commended Bawa's recent appointment saying the nomination will give the anti-graft agency the independence it deserves.
Magu reacts to Bawa's appointment as EFCC boss
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Ibrahim Magu reacted to the appointment of Bawa as his successor by President Buhari, describing the development as shocking.
Reacting through his lawyer Tosin Ojaomo, Magu said the "appointment came to me as a shock" as justice has not been served in respect to the allegations of power abuse levelled against him.
Ojaomo said Magu was suspended for an allegation that has not been proven against him, adding that the presidency must come out clean on whether the embattled ex-EFCC boss "has been found wanting or not.

EFCC speaks on corruption allegation against Magu's successor
In a related development, the anti-graft body defended its newly appointed chairman Bawa following corruption allegation ushering in a new leadership of the EFCC.
A statement by the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, absolved Bawa of any wrongdoing, adding that the new anti-graft czar has no corruption record.
Bawa's appointment had raised a speck of dust as he was alleged to have diverted 224 forfeited trucks, resulting in his arrest and purported removal as Port Harcourt zonal head of the body by his former boss Magu.
