Kagara abduction: It's disgusting, UN sends message to President Buhari

The United Nations (UN) has condemned the abduction of students and staff members of the Government Science College in Kagara, Niger state.

The UN's secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, on Thursday, February 18, described the development as abhorrent and unacceptable, The Cable reports.

Guterres made this comment in a statement released by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric.

The UN boss called on the President Buhari-led federal government to use all resources at its disposal to ensure the safe release of the captives and expressed condolences to the affected families.

In a similar vein, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) frowned at the recurrence of kidnap in the country.

The international body urged the federal government to ensure the “immediate and unconditional release” of the school children.

Expressing deep displeasure over the incident, it added that the abduction of pupils is a violation of their fundamental right.

Quoting its Nigeria representative, Peter Hawkins, UNICEF said:

“Children should feel safe at home and at school at all times. Parents should not need to worry for the safety of their children when they send them off to school in the morning.”

Meanwhile, the truth as to why bandits kidnapped Kankara boys in Katsina state had been revealed by the gang leader himself, Auwal Daudawa.

Daudawa confessed that the gang launched the attack because Governor Bello Matawalle dared his colleagues.

The repentant bandit said Governor Matawalle had vowed that he will never dialogue with criminals, so it was vital for them to shock him with their capacity for violence.

His words:

"I did that in Katsina because the governor came out to say he will not dialogue again with our people. So, we said since they said they were not interested in a peace deal and they were sending military jets to torment our people and destroy what we had, we should take the battle to those who are not interested in peace..."
