Ogbonnaya Orji: President Buhari appoints new NEITI boss

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, February 18, approved the appointment of Orji Ogbonnaya Orji as the executive secretary of the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

According to Willie Basset, the director of information of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Orji's appointment will last for five years starting from Saturday, February 19, The Nation reports.

In his message to Orji, the president charged him to use his new office to uphold transparency, diligence, and honesty in the country.

A statement from the OSGF read in part:

“The appointment takes effect from 19th February 2021. Until the appointment, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji was the Agency’s Director of Communications & Advocacy.

“He began his career at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and also worked with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) where Dr. Orji managed several donor-funded projects."

Meanwhile, Bashir Ahmad, an aide to President Buhari on new media, had denied getting an appointment as a manager of the Department of Petroleum Resource (DPR) in the Ministry of Petroleum.

There were reports that Bashir was secretly appointed as DPR manager by his principal Buhari. The news blog also claimed that Bashir was appointed "despite lacking vital training in hydrocarbon regulations."

The report led to a social media confrontation, with a Twitter user named Gbenga Gold Olorunponmi saying he was "utterly ashamed" that Bashir was appointed despite that he is "grossly unqualified for this job."
