BREAKING: Senate asks Buhari to declare state of emergency on insecurity nationwide

- Senators who spoke in support of the resolution by the upper chamber lamented over the security situation across the country

The Nigerian Senate has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency across the country with immediate effect.

The demand was part of the Senate’s resolution on Wednesday, February 17 as a holistic response to the mounting security challenges across the country.

The resolution was made moments after Senator Sani Musa cited Order 42 and 52 to seek the leave of the Senate to present a motion on the abduction of students and teachers of Government Science School, Kagara, Niger state.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that an undisclosed number of students have been abducted in a raid by suspected armed bandits on the Government Science College Kagara in Niger state.

Shehu Sani, a former Nigerian senator via Twitter on Wednesday, February 17, confirmed the attack on the school which is his alma mata, adding that some staff members of the institution were also abducted by armed men.

The incident comes days after the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu flagged-off a special security action plan, code-named Operation Puff Adder II ’ to reinforce the ongoing fight against banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes in the country.

Frank Mba, police spokesman, stated that the new special operation will be intelligence-led and community-driven.

Mba also said the operation will be executed in sustained collaboration with the Armed Forces, the intelligence community, and other sister security agencies.
