Buhari asks Senate to confirm 40-year-old Bawa as EFCC boss

- A change of leadership at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been made

- President Buhari appointed Abdulrasheed Bawa as the substantive chairman of the anti-graft agency

Abdulrasheed Bawa has been appointed as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Legit.ng gathered that the Nigerian leader asked the Senate to confirm Bawa's appointment as the head of the anti-graft agency.

This was made known in a statement by Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, and shared on the social media platform of the presidency on Tuesday, February 16.

According to Adesina, the president conveyed his request in a letter to Senate President Ahmad Lawan in accordance with Paragraph 2(3) of Part1, CAP E1 of EFCC Act 2004.

The 40-year-old will be taking over from Muhammed Umar who has been in acting capacity since July 2020.

Legit.ng recalls that Umar took over the affairs of the agency pending the conclusion of the investigation into allegations made against Ibrahim Magu.

After approving the suspension of Magu, President Buhari on Friday, July 10, 2020, appointed Umar to take over the chairmanship of the anti-graft agency in an acting capacity.

Bawa, a trained EFCC investigator was one of the pioneer cadet officers from 2005. He holds a B.Sc degree in Economics, and Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy.

Bawa has vast experience in the investigation and prosecution of Advance Fee Fraud cases, official corruption, bank fraud, money laundering, and other economic crimes.

He has undergone several specialised trainings in different parts of the world.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that one month after Ayo Salami submitted its report on the former acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, the presidency is yet to take any step on it.

The Salami panel set up in July 2020, to investigate various allegations of wrongdoing against Magu, submitted its report to the president on November 20, 2020.

The former president of the Court of Appeal had while submitting the report, said the panel received 46 petitions and memoranda from individuals and organisations with complaints against Magu and the commission.
