Shasha crisis: Northern governors visit Oyo in search of peace

In efforts to give peace a chance in Oyo state following the recent crisis at Shasha market in Ibadan, some northern governors are currently in the state to meet Governor Seyi Makinde at the government house in Agodi.

Governors present at the meeting include Zamfara state governor, Bello Matawalle, Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano and Abubakar Bello of Niger.

This was disclosed on Twitter by the state governor, Seyi Makinde.

Also, Aminu Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto raised an eyebrow at the ethnic violence in Shasha area of Akinyele local government in Oyo state.

The governor, who spoke via a statement on Sunday, February 14, warned that such an inter-ethnic conflict can degenerate into civil war if not quickly addressed.

It would be recalled that in a clash that trailed the farmer-herder crisis in Oyo state, aggrieved Hausa and Yoruba people on Saturday, February 13, attacked one another in a tragic uprising that led to wanton destruction.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the recent clash between Yorubas and Hausas in Shasha community generated reactions across the country, with many condemning the fracas.

In light of the attack, northerners have been urged not to make any trips to the southwest for now.

The appeal was made by the Northern Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN) who expressed concerns following the alleged constant attacks against northerners.

In a related development, the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Makinde to investigate the incident in Shasha community.

The group made this known in a statement at the weekend, by its publicity secretary, Barrister Yinka Oguntimehin, and sighted by Legit.ng.

According to the OPC publicity scribe, an investigation needs to be carried out so as to bring the culprits to book and also forestall any further crisis.
