Man City boss Guardiola challenges Bayern Munich with Messi after German club equalled his record

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a challenge to his former club Bayern Munich after the German side won the Club World Cup for the sixth time.

Hansi Flick’s men are now the second team in history to achieve such feat as they complete a clean sweep of available silverware after Barcelona did the same in 2009.

Guardiola was in charge at Barcelona when he led Lionel Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and a host of other superstars when the Spanish club set the record.

The tactician has now stated that he is ready for another challenge, telling Bayern they are now the second team to achieve such.

The former Bayern manager said via Mirror:

“Big congratulations to all Bayern family for this incredible success, to be the Club World Champion, especially to win six titles.

“But I would like to say to Hansi that you are the second team to win the six titles in a row, so before it was Barcelona, so maybe I can call Messi and company, and we can play for the seventh title?

“Tell me when and where, and we will be there.”

Manchester City are still tracking Barcelona captain Lionel Messi and will likely launch another bid for the superstar in March or April, sources say.

The Argentine’s contract will lapse in June and he has been free to negotiate with clubs since January 1 as his future remains unclear.

Manchester City led the move for the six-time Ballon d’Or in August 2020 after he handed the Catalan club his transfer request, but was forced to reverse his decision after the club cited a clause in his contract.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne is reportedly not impressed with the Etihad club following the new contract terms they have offered him.

Reports have it that the Belgian whose contract expires in 2023 is annoyed with the new offer he received as the Citizens are desperate to keep him at the club.

The 29-year-old's current contract which he signed in 2018 sees him take home around £250,000-a-week, but reports claim he has been offered reduced wages in a fresh contract.
