250 teachers in Rivers state protest, demand five-year unpaid salaries from Wike-led govt

Teachers of primary and secondary schools in Rivers state government-owned tertiary institutions have raised the alarm that they have not been paid their salaries running for five years.

Punch reports that they alleged that their salaries were stopped on February 18, 2016, by the Nyesom Wike-led administration.

According to them, a government directive was issued that the names of the affected teachers be expunged from the state government salary voucher.

The teachers, numbering up to 250, appealed to the state governor to urgently pay the salaries and the accruing arrears to enable them to cater to their families and health needs.

One of the male teachers said:

“The governor is our father; let him come to our aid and remove this shame from our faces.”

Meanwhile, as some governments battle with the payment of teachers' wages, some pastors are putting smiles on the faces of citizens.

Recall that a popular Nigerian pastor, David Ibiyeomie has built a brand new primary school where students are on a full scholarship.

Ibiyeomie is a televangelist, founder and senior pastor of Salvation Ministries, in Port Harcourt.

On Tuesday, February 2, the 58-year old pastor dedicated the school named Home of Success Academy.

The school is an A level primary school with all the basic amenities needed and a very conducive environment for learning.

To be enrolled in the academic institution, students are expected to pass the entrance examination of the school.

In a related development, the Catholic Bishop of Yola, Most Reverend Dam Mamza, is building an estate with 86 houses for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Adamawa state.

The news was shared by an educational books publisher and tech enthusiast on Twitter, Mr. Gbenro Adegbola.

Legit.ng gathered that the Bishop is also building schools too and has converted his cathedral to an IDPs camp, where children from all religions are welcome to study.
