2023: New electoral law won’t guarantee credible polls, Reps deputy whip Onyejeocha declares

- The deputy whip of the House of Reps, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has charged the FG over the new electoral law

- Onyejeocha said that the country's future elections would be determined by the characters of the political leaders

- The lawmaker also noted that the push for a new southeast state would continue

Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the deputy whip of the House of Representatives, has sent a strong message to the federal government ahead of the 2023 general elections.

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard, the lawmaker said that the future elections in the country may still not be credible even with a new electoral act.

The lawmaker said on Tuesday, February 9, that unless there is a character change by a majority of Nigerians, a new electoral law would still not guarantee credible elections in 2023.

Onyejeocha, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress(APC), was reacting to the delay in the passage of a clean copy of the bill for presidential assent.

The lawmaker, however, assured that a clean copy of the document would be presented to the president before March this year.

She further assured that the National Assembly caucus would push for the creation of the sixth southeast state through the ongoing constitution amendment process.

According to her, the establishment of a new southeast state would address the regional imbalance currently existent, saying that besides the zone, all others had six states.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, took a swipe at the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government following concerns of other prominent Nigerians.

It was reported that Jega said the Nigerian leader has disappointed so many people, describing the performance of his administration as very disappointing.

The immediate past electoral commission boss who made the disclosure in an interview said the Buhari administration performed below the expectations of many Nigerians.

In another report, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeals filed by Senator Ifeanyi Ararume in which he sought to be made the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the December 5 Imo North senatorial by-election.

The court on Friday, February 5, affirmed the judgments of the Court of Appeal in Owerri which had rejected Ararume's requests.

The court ruled that after reviewing all the arguments by parties and the records, it found that the appeals lack merit.
