- Rio Ferdinand believes his former side may have squandered a glorious chance to lift the title this season
- Man United are currently trailing league leaders City by five points after registering disappointing results in recent days
- United have picked just five points from the last 12 available to drop to second on the charts with 45 points
Rio Ferdinand has cast doubts on Man United's title credentials following their dramatic 3-3 draw against Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday, February 6.
United surrendered a two-goal lead to allow Everton spring a comeback to grab a point at the Theatre of Dreams.
The Reds Devils took a 2-0 lead before the break before the visitors struck in quick succession in the second half through Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez.
Scott McTominay looked to have nicked it for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored with the last kick of the match to level matters.
The feat saw United fail to go level on points with leaders Man City who later thrashed reigning champions Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield to open a five-point lead atop the standings with a game to play.
And with more than half of the season's fixtures already played, Ferdinand contends the title has slipped from United's hands.
According to the legendary English defender, Solskjaer's men squandered a glorious chance to win the domestic crown for the first time in eight years.
"The problem is we’ve let this opportunity slip through our hands. You can see Man City with their experience, they’ve smelt blood, they’ve put their heads down, they’ve gone," Metro UK quoted Rio saying.
"But Man United have stuttered, we’ve got the choke going in and out, haven’t got it quite working properly. We've choked it. It is that simple," he added.
After their disappointing draw, United are due to return to Premier League action on Sunday, February 14, when they will take on struggling West Brom at home.
They will be desperate to use the tie to return to winning ways to revive their title hopes.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
The French World Cup winner will run out of contract with Los Blancos in the summer of 2022 and he is yet to commit his future to the LaLiga defending champions.
Sources close to the Santiago Bernabeu outfit has now revealed that the Spanish club is considering selling the player so as not to lose him for free.
