Banditry: Allow northern communities to protect themselves, Shehu Sani tells FG

A former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani has lent his voice again following the fight against banditry in the northern part of the country.

The ex-senator representing Kaduna central said that those who can’t protect their land should not interrupt the people that decide to.

In a tweet on Monday, February 8, the outspoken former lawmaker and critic stated that bandits have ravaged and pillaged most parts of the rural northwest.

Sani also revealed that in some cases, it takes days for the corpses of their victims to be found.

He went on to accuse herdsmen of moving on motorcycles to raze villages and kill with impunity.

Governor El-Rufai rejects Sheik Gumi's move

The former lawmaker's statement is coming on the heels of Governor Nasir El-Rufai's lack of supporting the reconciliatory moves Sheik Ahmed Gumi is making with bandits on behalf of the state.

El-Rufai on Monday, February 8, said the state government will never negotiate with killers and kidnappers who ought to be arrested and prosecuted.

The Kaduna governor told journalists that the federal government should assist states with air and ground forces to neutralise the criminals.

Gumi meets with armed bandits in Zamfara forests

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Sheik Ahmad Gumi, one of the most fearless and perhaps unconventional Islamic clerics, had a session with some bandits on Tuesday, February 2, in Zamfara forests.

The fearless scholar is famous for going into the deep recesses of forests to dialogue with the armed criminals in a bid to hear their grievances and possibly fashion out a workable method of stopping the bloodletting.

Outrage as Gumi demands amnesty for bandits

In a related development, the Middle Belt Forum has faulted Gumi over his statement on bandits. He had called on FG to deploy budget for security in addressing the demands of bandits.

According to the national publicity secretary of the forum, Dr Isuwa Dogo, it is strange for FG to use tax money on people who have been killing Nigerians.

He also questioned Gumi's motive in visiting the bandits and the name change he requested for them.
