Nigeria police arraign former LG boss for allegedly helping bandits

- The former caretaker chairman of a local government in Katsina state has been arraigned in court

A report by The Punch indicates that Haruna Musa Mota, the former caretaker chairman for Jibia local government area of Katsina, is facing the full wrath of the law over his alleged ties with bandits in the state.

Gambo Isah, the Katsina police spokesperson, confirming the arrest of the former chairman, added that Mota has already been charged to court.

Though the police spokesperson did not give details on Mota's arrest, he, however, revealed that the ex-council boss was apprehended for allegedly aiding and abetting bandits.

The newspaper citing other sources noted that Mato was arraigned on Friday, February 5, before a senior magistrate court.

Mota has been remanded in a Katsina correctional centre pending the completion of the investigation on his case.

In another report by Sahara Reporters, an audio recording resurfaced in which Mota was heard discussing the abduction of students from Kankara LGA with the commander of a banditry group, Awulu.

According to the recording, the former LGA chairman told the commander that Governor Aminu Masari claimed the group was paid N800 million to secure the freedom of the schoolboys.

Legit.ng recalls that the schoolboys were abducted by bandits in what has struck a big blow on the face of efforts by the government across levels towards the fight against terror in the northern region.

According to the report, gunmen invaded the school at about 11 pm on Friday, December 11, 2020, and launched an attack on the area that lasted for over two hours.

At the end of the raid, an unconfirmed number of students and residents were declared missing from the town.

Kankara abduction: Masari denies ransom

Meanwhile, Governor Masari of Katsina revealed that the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) was responsible for the release of the Kankara boys.

Governor Masari, however, denied claims that the state government paid a ransom in cash to secure the boys' freedom.

Speaking on how the abducted students were freed, the governor explained that the military, the police, his special senior adviser on security, Mallam Ibrahim Katsina, and the MACBAN were directly involved in the process.
