Nigerian striker wins prestigious award, named best player of the decade

The international federation for history and statistics (IFFHS) has named Nigerian striker Asisat Oshoala as the female best player in Africa in the last decade.

The four-time African Footballer of the Year scooped the crown ahead of Cameroon's Gabrielle Leonie Ngaska and fellow compatriot Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene.

The award was given to the most outstanding women's player between 2011 to 2020 and the Barcelona forward has proven to be the best in the last ten years.

The 26-year-old played for Robo FC and Rivers Angels on the local scene between 2009 and 2013 before making a breakthrough to play for Premier League side Liverpool in 2015.

She spent just a season with the Reds Ladies before joining Arsenal in the 2015-16 season before joining Chinese club Dalian Quanjian F.C.

After two seasons in the far East Oshoala moved to Barcelona in 2019 on a loan deal with a view of making the deal permanent.

She earned a contract with the Spanish side after helping Barca Ladies to the 2019 Champions League finals. The Lagos state born strike scored her side's only goal in the 4-1 loss to Lyon in the finals.

Oshoala has gone on two win the league title for her Spanish club and 33 goals in 32 appearances so far for the Catalan based side. In this campaign, she has bagged nine goals in 11 matches so far.

She has won three African Women's titles with the Falcons, the FA Cup with Arsenal and the league title Dalian Quanjian.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Asisat Oshoala has continued impressive her goalscoring form this season following Barcelona Ladies' victory over rival Real Madrid in the league.

The Nigerian international scored a brace in the game as her team won by 4-1 in the one-sided encounter.

Alexia Putellas and Jennifer Hermoso had put the Barca Ladies ahead in the 14 minutes and in the 23rd minute respectively.
