Tears, tributes as prominent Niger Delta leader is laid to rest in Akwa Ibom state

- Late Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (rtd) was on Saturday, February 6 laid to rest in Akwa Ibom state

- The funeral of the former military governor of Akwa Ibom state was conducted by Qua Iboe Church of Nigeria

- Prominent Nigerians attended the funeral to pay their last respect to a man many have described as an enigma

The remains of the first indigenous military governor of Akwa Ibom state, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (rtd), as his remains were laid to rest on Saturday, February 6.

The funeral had in attendance Governor Udom Emmanuel and wife, Martha, the governor of Bayelsa state, Senator Douye Diri, representatives from the Nigerian Air Force, and other prominent Nigerians.

Speaking at the funeral, with his words posted on his social media pages, Governor Emmanuel expressed sadness over the shocking passage of Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga, stating that a vacuum has been created in the Niger Delta.

Meanwhile, in honour of Nkanga’s contributions and legacies the Governor Udom Emmanuel, announced that a popular road will be named Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga Avenue in memory of the late military governor's memory.

On his part, Governor Diri of Bayelsa state described Nkanga as a peaceable man who was committed to advocating for the growth of the Niger Delta region.

Earlier in the week, a special valedictory session was held in honour of the departed former governor at the Exco Chambers Government House, Uyo.

Recall that in an interview with Legit.ng, Mr Bassey James, founder of Southern Atlantic Polytechnic, said Nkanga was a man loved by many people in Akwa Ibom state.

According to him, the former military administrator was a good man who always wants the best for the people of the state.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers also commiserated with his Akwa Ibom counterpart over the death of Nkanga.

Wike who was on a condolence visit to Governor Emmanuel at Government House Uyo, on Thursday, January 21 said what touches Akwa Ibom touches Rivers state.
