FG lists 3 categories of citizens to first get COVID-19 vaccine in Nigeria

- The federal government has disclosed those who will be prioritised when the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines commence in the country

- The information was released on behalf of the government by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency

- The government also assured of its commitment to acquiring COVID-19 vaccines that are safe, and effective

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has listed the categories of people to get vaccinated in Nigeria first as COVID-19 infection rates continue to go higher in the country.

NPHCDA boss, Dr. Faisal Shuaib revealed this on Saturday, February 6 while addressing a joint press conference alongside a representative of the World Health Organisation in Abuja.

According to him, Nigeria’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution priority will be as follows:

1. Frontline health workers

2. Elderly, and persons with co-morbidities and

3. Strategic country leadership.

Dr. Shuaib further said:

“The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 will continue to provide credible and up to date information on our journey towards controlling the spread of COVID-19 using the non-pharmaceutical interventions and the vaccines when they become available.
“I want to assure all Nigerians that the federal government under the leadership of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari is determined and committed to acquiring the COVID-19 vaccines that are safe, effective, and available for deployment.
“As clearly stated by the WHO Regional Director, there are a number of factors that were considered in allocating the small quantity of the 320,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine to COVAX countries.”

Recall that the minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed recently revealed why President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and state governors will be the first set of Nigerians to receive the much-awaited COVID-19 vaccines.

Alhaji Mohammed said the decision was deliberate and a strategy to put an end to conspiracy theories regarding the safety of the vaccines.

According to him, the government owes it as a point of duty to do a lot of enlightenment campaigns to neutralise the effect of the conspiracies and remove any doubt or fear from its citizens.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has classified Kogi as a high-risk state for the virus because of its failure to acknowledge the existence of the disease, report tests, or build isolation centres.

The federal government team announced the classification on Monday, February 1, and warned Nigerians to beware of visiting the state.

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state has consistently dismissed the existence of COVID-19 in Nigeria sparking outrage among health professionals and many Nigerians.
