Nigeria mourns as former deputy governor dies after a brief illness

An elder statesman, Jethro Akun, who once served as the interim deputy governor of Plateau state has died at the age of 76.

The Punch reported that Akun died on Thursday, morning, February 4, after a brief illness.

Prior to his death, the politician was a key member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Plateau state government in a statement confirmed the demise of the ex-deputy governor.

Governor Simon Lalong said Akun’s death is a great loss to Plateau state and the nation as a whole.

The governor stated that the politician made huge contributions to the development of the state during his political career.

He commiserated with the family of the deceased and prayed that God will grant his soul eternal rest.

Legit.ng recalls that in 2006, the late politician was appointed as Deputy Governor to Michael Botmang who took over as governor after his boss Joshua Dariye was impeached

Akun and his boss spent six months in office before they were removed by the Supreme court which declared the interim administration illegal.

In another news, the people of Dawakin Tofa local government area of Kano state have been thrown into mourning following the death of former lawmaker Dr Abdullahi Maikano Rabiu.

According to The Punch, the former House of Representatives member died of COVID-19 complications on Thursday, February 4.

Rabiu, a philanthropist, passed away at Kwanar Dawakin Isolation Centre, in Kano, with a family member of the deceased confirming his (Rabiu's) death to press on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, following the controversy that trailed the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) resident officer, the director-general, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, has issued a statement.

Ibrahim denied the viral report, saying the staff did not die at the orientation camp in Kano state, as being circulated.

In a report by Channels TV, Ibrahim on Wednesday, February 3, explained that the officer was taken to the isolation center where he, unfortunately, passed away after testing positive for coronavirus.
