Insecurity: Allow Nigerian citizens to buy AK47 for protection, Taraba governor tells Buhari

Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba state said the security challenges facing the country should prompt the Buhari-led federal government to permit Nigerians to carry licenced guns to defend themselves.

Ishaku made the statement on Tuesday, February 3, in reaction to the kidnapping and subsequent killing of a local government chairman in the state by gunmen.

According to Channels TV, the governor stated that the insecurity challenges in the country have worsened to the point that Nigerians need to adopt a new method of security.

He pointed out that Nigeria cannot keep repeating the same security strategy while expecting a different result.

“If we cannot be able to provide security for our citizens, then allow all the citizens to buy AK47, because if everybody is licensed with AK47, I swear nobody will come to your house, or peradventure he does then it depends on who is faster.
“In a situation where we are all gagged with one security system that has been unable to work, and we are told to sit down and be counting the day our turn will come, I do not agree with it.”

The governor disclosed that the late Ardo-Kola local government chairman, Salihu Dovo, was abducted from his residence by about 20 men who were all armed with AK47 rifles.

He urged security agencies to arrest those responsible for the killing of the politician.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is confident that the fight against insurgency and other crimes in the country will be curtailed by the newly appointed service chiefs.

El-Rufai said he expects the new military commanders to succeed because they are coming in with new vigour.

He reportedly made the statement when he spoke with journalists during his visit to the Niger state governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, in Minna on Tuesday evening, February 2.
