Ahead of the next general election, former governor of Kano state, Senator Kabiru Gaya, has said the south should produce the country's next president.

Gaya, chairman of the Senate committee on Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), made this known while speaking at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) forum in Abuja.

According to the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker, the north had produced president for two terms and it is only fair for the presidency to shift to the south in 2023.

The senator who expressed his desire added that he will support a president from the southern part of the country and a northern vice president.

Gaya is of the opinion that it is only fair for the presidency to be rotated in such a way that Nigerians will have confidence in the system.

This is coming after Gaya urged the federal government to ensure that subsequent elections to be held in the country are free, fair, and credible.

Gaya gave this admonition while speaking with journalists on Tuesday, February 2, in Abuja.

According to the lawmaker, Nigeria needs to learn from how the United States handled its November 3 general election which successfully brought in a fresh government.

He said the federal government must put some measures in place to ensure that winners are not denied their positions in political offices through rigging and various malpractices.
