Court sends Nigerian teacher to prison for allegedly killing 3 policemen

A teacher in Benue state has been remanded in prison for allegedly murdering three policemen.

The remand order was issued by a magistrates’ court in Makurdi on Tuesday, February 2, The Leadership reported.

The suspect, Mernyi Christopher, is facing charges of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, acts of terrorism, and culpable homicide.

The magistrate, Ajuma Igama, who did not take the plea of the suspect for want in the jurisdiction, said he should be kept in a correctional centre, pending legal advice.

The judge also asked the police to return the case file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and adjourned the case until February 25, for further mention.

Vanguard reported that earlier in the trial, the police told the court that the accused committed the offence on December 24, 2020.

Prosecution counsel, Sergeant Ato alleged that Christopher murdered and carted away the rifles of three policemen on guard duty at the residence of the chairman of Katsina-Ala local government area in Benue.

He said the accused was arrested by a police team following a manhunt.

The prosecution also told the court that the suspect confessed to committing the offence, alongside other conspirators.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Adamu, Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has remained in office despite the fact that he has attained the statutory age of retirement.

Though Adamu was expected to leave office as the nation's police chief on Monday, February 1, The Punch reported that he is still in charge as President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to appoint a successor.

The newspaper noted that Adamu was in office till past 6pm on Monday and attended to a large number of visitors.

Meanwhile, the presidency has reacted to agitations and calls from a section of the country for President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint the next Inspector-General of Police (IGP) from the southeast.

In a conversation with journalists on Monday, February 1, Garba Shehu, a presidential media aide, said President Buhari will not be driven by ethnic sentiments or affiliations in his choice of the next police chief.
