No handover yet: Adamu remains in office as Buhari delays appointment of new IGP
- Though IGP Adamu has attained the retirement age, there is no handover of power at the Nigeria police yet
- This is as a result of President Buhari's delay in appointing Adamu's successor
- Meanwhile, a senior lawyer had said that by law, Adamu is no longer a member of the Nigeria police from 12 midnight on Monday, February 1

Mohammed Adamu, Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has remained in office despite the fact that he has attained the statutory age of retirement.
Though Adamu was expected to leave office as the nation's police chief on Monday, February 1, The Punch reports that he is still in charge as President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to appoint a successor.
The newspaper noted that Adamu was in office till past 6pm on Monday and attended to a large number of visitors.

It further noted that findings indicate that the police chief did not hand over to any senior officer as many had expected.
Legit.ng gathers that President Buhari was supposed to convene a meeting of the Police Council which has the mandate to appoint a new IGP.
It is, however, learnt that the council merely adopts whoever is appointed as IGP by the president.
The council comprises the president, state governors and the chairman of the Police Service Commission.
Constitutional crisis
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that President Buhari was warned not to cause a constitutional crisis in the country by allowing the outgoing IGP, Mohammed Adamu, stay in office beyond the night of Monday, February 1.
The warning was given by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa on Monday, February 1.
Adegboruwa stated that by law, Adamu seizes to be a member of the Nigeria Police Force from 12 midnight on Monday.
Presidency speaks
Meanwhile, the presidency has President Buhari will not be driven by ethnic sentiments or affiliations in his choice of the next police chief.

Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, made the statement in reaction to agitations and calls from a section of the country that the next IGP should come from the southeast.
Shehu insisted that the president will only appoint someone who will ensure the security of Nigerians is better than what has been recorded.
