IGP Adamu risks imprisonment amid exit from police force

- Mohammed Adamu, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) is facing some serious charges

- The police boss has been summoned by an Abuja court following his alleged refusal over orders

Amid the retirement of the police boss, Mohammed Adamu, a Federal High Court in Abuja has summoned him.

In a report by The Punch, Adamu was ordered by the court to appear before it on Thursday, February 4, over his continued disobedience to a court order.

The summons issued against the IGP by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu is following Adamu's alleged refusal to reinstate Patrick Okoli, a deputy commissioner of police that was forcefully retired.

It is gathered that the police IG is expected to show cause why contempt charge should not be filed against him which might land him in prison.

The court summons was said to have been served on Adamu at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Adamu bows out

This follows palpable anxiety at the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) headquarters over the retirement of the inspector general who was expected to bow out in grand style on Monday, February 1.

Adamu who has spent his 35 years in the force, broke through ranks to become the boss of the police force. He was enlisted on February 2, 1986.

Adamu, who is the 20th IGP the country has produced, was appointed as the police boss by President Muhammadu Buhari, replacing Ibrahim Kpotun Idris of Niger state on January 15, 2019.

Presidency hints on who will succeed IGP Adamu

Meanwhile, the presidency has reacted to agitations and calls from a section of the country for President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint the next IGP from the southeast.

In a conversation with journalists on Monday, February 1, Garba Shehu, a presidential media aide, revealed the calibre of person the president will choose to succeed Mohammad Adamu.

Shehu said President Buhari will not be driven by ethnic sentiments or affiliations in his choice of the next police chief, in line with what he did while picking the new service chiefs.
