Liverpool can confirm that Joel Matip has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2020-21 season due to an ankle ligament injury.

The 29-year-old German suffered the setback after colliding with Heung-Min Son during the Reds' 3-1 triumph over Tottenham late last month and was subsequently substituted at half-time.

He joins the duo of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez who are out for a long period of time with Jurgen Klopp using make-shift defenders to fill the void.

The German manager told the club's official website that his countryman is out but will be back before pre-season gets started. He told Liverpool media and reported by Sky Sports:

"Unfortunately, we found out now after everybody looked at it that Joel will be out for the rest of the season. But he will be ready for the start of the next pre-season and finally, everything will be sorted."

Klopp has often interchanged the likes of Jordan Henderson and fellow midfielder Fabinho at centre back in recent weeks, with youngsters Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams also filling in.

However, with a hectic schedule ahead of the defending champions in all competitions, Klopp has been provided with reinforcements.

They have completed the signing of defenders Ben Davies from Preston and Ozan Kabak from Schalke on transfer deadline day.

Matip scored once in 12 appearances across championships due to a series of injuries he suffered this campaign. And Klopp added:

"The situation is just, the season started and Joel was injured when the season started, unfortunately. We should not forget that at Schalke when he was there he played pretty much all the time completely through, he never had something.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has admitted that he risks being fined having lamented the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) into the game of football.

Despite a comfortable 3-1 win over West Ham United in Sunday, January 31, the Egyptian did not mince words about his feelings over the controversial technology.

After the game, Salah who found the back of the net twice in the encounter stated that VAR is killing the game.
