Explanations have been given concerning why President Muhammadu Buhari relieved former service chiefs of their official duties on Tuesday, January 26.

A presidential media aide, Femi Adesina, said the president needed to get fresh energy to tackle the rising insecurity faced by the country, Punch reports.

Adesina made it clear that the former security officers were not removed from office because they failed Nigeria as some are now claiming.

He said:

“The fact that they have to leave today does not mean they have failed. No, I wouldn’t think so. It is just that it is time to have fresh energy, fresh blood, and fresh ideas in the theatre of battles where the military is involved in the country."

Meanwhile, the newly appointed service chiefs had been warned never to make Nigeria's security a political issue.

The warning that came in form of pieces of advice was given by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers on Tuesday, January 26.

Wike congratulated the new appointees and encouraged them to see their offices as an opportunity to revamp the nation's security architecture that had suffered a setback and backlashes for years.

The governor also urged the service chiefs not to compromise their duties by aligning themselves with politicians in the country. In a statement by the governor's commissioner for Paulinus Nsirim, made available to Legit.ng, read:

“The new service chiefs should not politicise security by aligning with politicians. What the country needs now is competence and professionalism that will reduce insecurity to the barest minimum.
“This is an opportunity to serve the nation and I believe that the service chiefs will be focused and dedicated.”
