Governor Okowa congratulates new Chief of Defence Staff, Delta-born General Irabor

Delta state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has congratulated Major-General Lucky Irabor on his appointment as Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, January 26.

In a statement sent to Legit.ng by his spokesman, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, in Asaba, Okowa said that the sacrifices of the new Defence chief towards peace and progress of the nation, especially his acknowledged gallantry at assignments, were outstanding.

He thanked Buhari for appointing an illustrious son of Delta into the exalted position of CDS, and said that it was an elevated responsibility given to a deserving officer.

According to him, Irabor, who hails from Agbor in Delta, has the requisite experience for his new job having served as Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Doyle Force Commander of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and other key positions in the Nigerian military.

Okowa urged Irabor to ensure that under his watch, Nigeria would record improvement in military-civil relations, adding that he should continue to uphold the territorial integrity of the nation.

He lauded the new CDS for the successes recorded at the many army formations where he served across the country, which according to him, contributed in strengthening Nigerian Army's capacity for its constitutional role.

Part of the statement read:

“We are proud of you and we know that you will continue to be a great ambassador of our great state.”

Meanwhile, following his resignation, Major-General Tukur Buratai now holds the title of the country's longest-serving Chief of Army Staff.

The Borno-born General spent a total of 66 months as the nation's top army chief beating Late General Sani Abacha's record of 60 months.

Recall that President Buhari had promised to reorganise Nigeria's security architecture in 2021.

The president made the promise in his 2021 new year message to Nigerians on Friday, January 1, adding that the security agencies will be trained adequately on how to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups.
